Instructor Bio:

Winnie Balla is a fine artist turned textile crafter. They found themself reaching for a form of artistic expression at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. They had tried everything from realism based graphite drawings in high school, hand thrown ceramics work in community college, and printmaking at the country’s last museum school, before finding their home in rug tufting. In an attempt to challenge the traditional expectations of fine art, Winnie began working with vibrant, high contract colors and an illustrative style. While their fine art education is invaluable to their process, Winnie pulls inspiration from artists and styles they were never exposed to in college. Counterculture artists, such as Bonnie MacLean and Rick Griffin, were essential inspiration in Winnie’s own path as an artist. Winnie’s mission is to take textile work and craft making, forms of art often thought of as illegitimate, and make them accessible and innovative.
